The Dedham art scene is growing and thriving. It's a great town to catch some local theater, painting or even writing for great prices and always family friendly.

Last Sunday I spent my afternoon with the kids at St. Susanna's to hear the incredible Parkway Concert Orchestra to benefit the Dedham Music Association. They are the group that keeps the arts and music alive in the Dedham Schools. I was able to take my 3 kids to a Boston Pops quality show for $10 and not have to worry about finding parking or that my kids would wreak havoc. We sat in the back pew and had a ball. My two older ones were standing on the kneeler(probably a faux pas) and imitating the conductor while the little one was snug in the sling enjoying the music.

Coming up there is a theater production of Guys and Dolls at the First Church on Friday and Saturday, March 19th and 20th, Zombie Prom at Dedham High School, March 11 and 12th, an adult writing workshop class at Blue Bunny on March 12, and oil painting workshop on March 15th at Endicott Estate at 7pm. If arts aren't your thing, but spelling is, join the Dedham Education's Foundation annual Spelling Bee on March 19th at 7pm at the Dedham Middle School.

Dedham is known by many for Rte 1 or Providence Highway. Residents from surrounding towns near and far all come to Dedham to get their big box store fix or to hit one of the many chain stores that crowd this infamous stretch of road. This morning, I walked down East St. to Dedham Square. Walking along a lovely new sidewalk and passing under the new bridge, I thought how pretty the town looked. It's easy to appreciate a cloudy day by simply being outside amongst the colorful trees. As I passed the Fairbanks House, I couldn't help but wonder what the trees and land looked like in 1632. Looking at the foliage there now, I'm sure Fall was the Fairbanks family's favorite time of year as well. There are some really nice main roads in Dedham that so few people get to see. Just take a right or a left off of Rte 1 and you will surely find yourself wondering, "Am I still in Dedham?". East Street, Mt. Vernon Street, Walnut St., and some of my favorite smaller streets like Woodleigh Rd, Abbott Street, or any of the roads off High Street reveal beautiful, quaint neighborhoods. There, you'll find a Dedham that is the antithesis of Rte 1: nice homes, trees, land, a sense of neighborhood, community and most of all, history.

After School Enrichment Programs

A few weeks ago I was scrambling to try and get a few more kids to sign up for the Musical Theater class being offered on Wednesday afternoons at Avery. We got the 6 students needed to make the class run, leaving my 1st grader very happy. The reason for low enrollment? Competition. Wednesday afternoon also offers a fabulous Cake Decorating class with the school secretary, Mrs. G., who is also runs her own cake decorating business and the various instrument lessons that take place at all 4 elementary schools with the Dedham School of Music. On Tuesday's and Thursday a yoga instructor from Yoga Energy in Dedham Square comes and runs yoga classes with the students.

The After School Enrichment Programs being offered at Avery are so interesting, I wondered what was happening at the other elementary schools. It was as easy as looking on each schools website or asking friends with kids in these schools to find out. I've already written about the great language programs that travels to all 4 elementary through out the week, getting kids excited about a different language and culture(click here to read more about this program).

Over at Oakdale there is a catalogue several pages long of the different offerings after school. Everything from Conversational Arabic to Italian cooking with Deli After Dark owner Matt Cawley(Wow to both of these options!!).

Greenlodge's winter program was offering a student writer class, a basketball class, board games, no‐bake baking, newspaper writing, floor hockey, arts and crafts, art, cupcake baking and decorating, and camp crafts.

Finally at Riverdale, who, by the way. had an amazing Afro-Brazilian band come to play for the kids yesterday, also has an interesting list of after school enrichment happening like: Mad Science, Low-carbon die(love that one) and various parent-led sports/activities, running, kickball and fitness.

It's impressive to see the community and parent involvement in educating Dedham children.
